Job Summary

The Mechanical Designer will work as part of the engineering team and support sales and customer requests by designing HVAC and other mechanical and electrical products. The role involves product design, development, documentation, prototyping, manufacturing support, and collaboration with internal and external customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Confer with sales, engineering, customers, and other stakeholders regarding existing and potential engineering projects and products.

  • Support engineering, sales, and production teams as directed.

  • Design a wide variety of products accurately and efficiently using SolidWorks.

  • Research and prepare specifications for the purchase of materials.

  • Perform detailed calculations to establish manufacturing, construction, and installation standards and specifications.

  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) within the ERP system.

  • Create detailed drawings and flat-pattern drawings.

  • Maintain accurate document control, including revisions and archiving.

  • Provide support for product assembly and manufacturing.

  • Assist with product prototyping and development.

  • Inspect completed products and installations to ensure conformance with design and equipment specifications.

  • Complete accurate take-offs from architectural drawings using various methods.

  • Assist the sales team in preparing offers and proposals.

  • Interface with internal and external customers.

  • Research and test vendor and competitor products.

  • Investigate customer or public complaints, determine the nature and extent of problems, and recommend corrective measures.

  • Compile data and prepare reports related to existing and potential engineering studies and projects.

  • Supervise and train team members as needed.

Work Environment

The position is within a fast-paced, customer-focused engineering and manufacturing environment specializing in HVAC products and system solutions for commercial building applications.

The role may involve working in office, laboratory, manufacturing plant, and field environments. Duties may include sitting, walking, standing, face-to-face discussions, telephone communication, extensive computer use, email, and working in an open-office environment.

Some nights, weekends, and travel may be required.

When working in laboratory, manufacturing, or field environments, appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, earplugs, and protective footwear may be required. The position may involve exposure to fumes and odors from paints and solvents, dust, machine noise, and limited exposure to chemicals or oils.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED, military, vocational/trade school education, or engineering-related coursework required.

  • Associate degree preferred/required.

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related field is a plus.

  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD.

  • 5+ years of mechanical/product design experience preferred.

  • HVAC industry experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience designing products using sheet metal, steel, aluminum, aluminum castings, and plastics preferred.

  • Knowledge of motor/fan and water coil sizing and selection preferred.

  • Familiarity with various fabrication and manufacturing methods.

  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience with ERP systems preferred; Microsoft Dynamics GP experience is a plus.

  • Strong active listening and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective time and project management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-focused engineering and manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Experience

  • SolidWorks: 3+ years

  • AutoCAD: 3+ years

  • Mechanical Design: 5+ years

  • HVAC/Product Design: 5+ years preferred
