Medical Director - Primary Care

Location: Huntsville, Alabama

Job Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $238,700 - $381,300/year, based on experience and qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, comprehensive adult primary care approximately two days per week while maintaining high standards of evidence-based, patient-centered care.

  • Oversee day-to-day clinical operations, clinical policies, protocols, workflows, and processes to ensure efficient and effective delivery of care.

  • Provide clinical leadership, guidance, consultation, and support to physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical staff.

  • Serve as a collaborating physician for nurse practitioners, including clinical consultation, case discussions, chart review, peer review, and backup coverage when the primary collaborating physician is unavailable.

  • Supervise, mentor, and support medical providers, including participation in performance management, training, onboarding, continuing education, and professional development.

  • Lead quality assurance, continuous quality improvement, clinical audits, peer reviews, and patient safety initiatives.

  • Partner with executive and operational leadership on clinical strategy, program development, staffing, budgeting, resource planning, and practice efficiency.

  • Participate in provider recruitment, interviews, retention initiatives, and development of the medical team.

  • Assist with clinical coverage and provider support as needed, including patient care, referrals, medication/refill requests, telephone encounters, and coverage for provider absences.

  • Ensure timely and accurate EMR documentation, chart completion, credentialing, privileging, licensure, DEA requirements, and compliance with applicable healthcare regulations and organizational standards.

  • Support care for diverse patient populations, including HIV, PrEP/HIV prevention, STI treatment, Hepatitis C, LGBTQ+ healthcare, and gender-affirming care.

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to promote open communication, shared clinical decision-making, and a cohesive patient-care environment.

  • Visit satellite clinics approximately once per month and represent the medical team at organizational, community, and professional meetings as needed.

Clinical Practice

The Medical Director will primarily see adult patients and will maintain a relatively smaller patient panel than a full-time primary care physician because of the administrative responsibilities of the role.

  • Clinical schedule: approximately 2 days per week

  • Administrative/leadership responsibilities: approximately 3 days per week

  • No weekend clinic hours

  • After-hours call approximately once every six weeks

  • An answering service screens after-hours calls, with providers typically receiving approximately 1-2 calls per week during their call rotation.

  • No routine telephone prescribing of medications.

  • Long-term pain-management patients are generally referred to appropriate specialists.

Patient Population

The organization serves a diverse community-based patient population, including patients from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

The Medical Director will provide comprehensive adult primary care that may include:

  • General acute and chronic primary care

  • HIV care and management

  • HIV prevention and PrEP

  • STI testing and treatment

  • Hepatitis C management

  • LGBTQ+ primary care

  • Gender-affirming care

  • Preventive healthcare

  • Management of chronic medical conditions

Candidates should be comfortable providing care to patients across diverse demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds, including underserved and vulnerable populations.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Active, unrestricted Alabama medical license.

  • Ability to serve as a collaborating physician under Alabama requirements.

  • Current DEA registration.

  • Current Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate.

  • Current BLS certification.

  • Board certification is preferred but not required.

  • Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or another full-scope primary care background.

  • Demonstrated experience providing primary care.

  • Strong clinical leadership and provider collaboration experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Approximately 5-10 years of experience working in a community health center, FQHC, or similar community-based healthcare setting is preferred.

  • Approximately 3-5+ years of leadership or executive experience is preferred; candidates with somewhat less leadership experience may also be considered based on the overall strength of their background.

  • Previous FQHC/community health center experience is highly desirable because of the importance of understanding the FQHC care model.

  • Experience with HIV and PrEP is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with LGBTQ+ healthcare and gender-affirming care is highly desirable.

  • Experience with Hepatitis C and STI care is beneficial.

  • Experience collaborating with and supporting nurse practitioners is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $238,700-$381,300 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and overall background.

  • $20,000 sign-on bonus, payable after successful completion of the 90-day probationary period.

  • Up to $10,000 relocation assistance, subject to applicable repayment terms.

  • Potential student loan repayment assistance through eligible federal programs, including applicable HRSA and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) programs.

  • Quarterly quality incentive opportunity of up to $1,000 per quarter, based on achievement of designated organizational quality measures.
