Production Supervisor - Cheese Manufacturing

Job Summary

The Production Supervisor is responsible for providing leadership for plant operations. This individual will work closely with all departments to establish and enforce safe process methods that ensure operational effectiveness and production adherence.

The Production Supervisor will champion an environment of respect and responsibility through professional communication, accountability, teamwork, quality, safety, and productivity.

Essential Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time:

  1. Report employee safety, food safety, and food quality issues to appropriate personnel.

  2. Maintain heightened responsibility for food safety and food quality.

  3. Manage, mentor, and support production operations and employees.

  4. Work jointly with Maintenance to identify equipment issues, establish daily operational priorities, improve machine efficiency, and manage the priority and completion of work during the shift.

  5. Communicate and facilitate production expectations with plant personnel, ensuring goals are met on a daily and monthly basis.

  6. Ensure processing equipment setups are completed within the required timeframe to meet departmental productivity expectations.

  7. Establish training procedures and processes that improve job knowledge, including cross-training.

  8. Provide daily updates to department management.

  9. Build strong working relationships with plant personnel through leadership, teaching, and effective communication while ensuring company policies and procedures are followed.

  10. Provide day-to-day support to the Plant Superintendent regarding staffing, quality, efficiency, and daily operations.

  11. Act as backup in the absence of the Plant Superintendent.

  12. Understand software controls, including addressing system performance issues and providing training.

  13. Effectively delegate responsibilities while maintaining respectful relationships with employees.

  14. Maintain a zero-injury safety culture and motivate employees to follow safety policies and procedures.

  15. Participate in management reviews of the Food Safety and Quality system.

  16. Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner by gathering and analyzing information, participating in group problem-solving, and developing alternative solutions.

  17. Build a positive team environment, improve morale, and establish group commitment to meeting goals and objectives.

  18. Manage projects by creating workable plans, communicating changes effectively, building commitment, and overcoming resistance.

  19. Develop realistic action plans by prioritizing and planning work activities and identifying additional resources as needed.

  20. Maintain availability to employees, provide regular performance feedback, develop employee skills, and encourage professional growth.

  21. Communicate employee performance or behavioral concerns, both positive and negative, to Human Resources.

  22. React effectively under pressure, treat others with respect and consideration, accept responsibility for actions, and follow through on commitments.

  23. Lead and guide all Quality and Food Safety policies and procedures and report any nonconformities.

  24. Lead and guide all Safety policies and procedures and report any nonconformities.

  25. Lead and guide Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) policies and procedures and report any nonconformities.

  26. Establish and maintain strong customer relationships as needed.

  27. Work with Quality to promptly investigate customer complaints, determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and provide follow-up.

  28. Build and maintain strong working relationships with brand-owner leadership teams to drive accountability and continuous improvement.

  29. Partner with brand-owner leadership teams to ensure strong safety, quality, service, and cost performance.

  30. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

  • Approximately 5 years of relevant work experience preferred.

  • Approximately 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of SQF, HACCP, GMP, OSHA, and loss-control programs highly desirable.

  • Technical knowledge of fluid milk, cheese, and drying operations preferred.

  • Prior manufacturing experience is a plus.

Physical & Mental Demands

Office Environment

Work may be performed in a general office environment with low to moderate noise exposure. The position may occasionally be exposed to loud sounds or distracting noise levels.

The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, taste, or smell.

Frequent verbal and written communication is required, including interaction with vendors, suppliers, consultants, and internal personnel. The employee may occasionally be required to lift or move up to 25 pounds.

Manufacturing Environment

Work is performed in a manufacturing plant. The employee will frequently walk and stand and may be required to sit, use hands to operate tools or controls, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, taste, or smell.

The employee should be able to regularly lift up to 55 pounds and push or pull up to 75 pounds. The position requires the ability to climb ladders and work at elevations above four feet.

Employees may be regularly exposed to cold temperatures in storage areas and warm or hot temperatures with moderate to high humidity. Wet walking surfaces are common.

Working Environment

Office

This position operates in a professional office environment with regular face-to-face interaction with employees, vendors, suppliers, and consultants. Noise levels are generally low, although occasional exposure to louder equipment or distracting noise may occur.

Manufacturing

The employee may be exposed to electrical hazards, wet conditions, fumes, airborne particles, warm temperatures exceeding 100°F, cold temperatures in storage areas, moving mechanical equipment, chemicals used during sanitation processes, and elevated noise levels.

The employee may also be exposed to very low levels of ammonia.

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment is required depending on the job being performed. PPE may include:

  • Protective eyewear or face shields

  • Hearing protection

  • Hair and beard nets

  • Required uniforms

  • Protective footwear

  • Rubber gloves

  • Chemical-resistant aprons when working with chemicals
